Equine therapy is a term loosely used to describe the incorporation of horses to help treat a variety of physical and psychological problems.

Earth Connections' Horses Heal program offers equine therapy through Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine Assisted Counseling (EAC). Both programs focus on self-discovery and incorporte horses to teach participants alternative skills to draw from when faced with difficult challenges in an effort to overcome negative influences. Programs are available for individuals, couples, families, groups and teams. All of our equine assisted therapy programs are non-riding. Recreational riding is available through ParaMount Performance or can be included with EAL.

Most everyone is familiar with therapeutic riding for physically challenged individuals and sometimes our program is confused with that. Our program doesn’t deal with physical disabilities. It deals with emotional growth and learning. Horses Heal equine therapy is not about riding or horsemanship. It’s about changing beliefs and behavior patterns.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)

In the Horses Heal multi-session Equine Assisted Learning program, participants learn in a building block style how to interact with and care for horses. Each session builds on the last to ensure the safety of and promote confidence in the participant. This unique program of care, academic studies, and groundwork helps participants examine and change their behaviors. It is ideal for children, adolescents and adults seeking to develop the tools and strategies needed to make good choices. It is a great way to experience the benefits of our programs for those not seeking counseling.

Equine Assisted Learning promotes personal exploration of feelings and behaviors in an educational format. EAL programs can be customized to any length and to accommodate any size group. They provide an outstanding, experiential corporate team building experience. Instructors and equine specialists facilitate the Equine Assisted Learning programs.

Equine Assisted Counseling (EAC)

Equine Assisted Counseling, except for the adolescent/youth at risk program, does not include any academic studies or groundwork. A certified counselor and an equine specialist facilitate arena exercises. EAC addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs including behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse, eating disorders, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, relationship problems and communication needs. Our Equine Assisted Counseling program specializes in behavioral issues, substance abuse and eating disorders.

During an Equine Assisted Counseling session, participants are given a task to complete that requires approaching and communicating with another animal, another culture, another species. No instructions are given on how to complete the task and no time limit is given. The participant has the freedom to decide how to proceed while being observed by the facilitators. At appropriate points during and at the conclusion of each exercise, the facilitators will ask the clients questions about what they are thinking, feeling, or what they perceive the horse is thinking, feeling or doing. Their answers provide amazing insight into how they see themselves and how they operate when faced with certain situations or decisions. It provides a unique opportunity for the client to become more self-aware and to recognize the often self-imposed rules that may be preventing success (as they define it) in their endeavors.
